Standardised job descriptions are now available 

A set of standardised (generic) job descriptions is now published on this page, alongside updated guidance on HERA and the job evaluation process. Please note there is a set of job descriptions which will be finalised and published in the coming weeks, these are listed with a note coming soon.

A number of standardised job descriptions have been developed to support more consistent and efficient recruitment & job evaluation practices across the University. 

A standardised job description describes responsibilities within a particular grade which are applicable across the University.  The focus and context of the role may vary, however, in essence, the core responsibilities are broadly the same regardless of the department.  SJD’s ensure consistency in describing work for  typical and/or frequently occurring jobs, and to assist swifter recruitment as they have already been job evaluated (graded).   

When a standardised job description is used, it is not necessary to carry out a full HERA evaluation. Roles underpinned by a standardised job description, and existing posts which have been evaluated using HERA (where the duties are to remain the same), will also not routinely be graded.

Generic vs standardised job descriptions 

For the time being, both generic and standardised job descriptions may be used for recruitment and regrading. As we move forward, the Reward Team will review the existing generics to ensure they remain up to date and consider alignment with the new SJD format as appropriate.

Standardised JDs launch - questions and answers (Ms Teams channel)

A publicly accessible Teams channel where you can post questions on SJDs for all staff involved in recruitment and grading processes. Questions can be posted at any time; the Reward Team will review and respond daily between 10:00am–11:00am . If needed, the Reward team may follow up via direct message or a call. However, we encourage all queries to be posted in the channel so others can benefit from shared learning. All questions and responses will be reviewed over the next three months and used to develop a formal FAQ, which will be published on the Reward webpages. This support will run until October 2025, after which it will transition into a broader Grading Community of Practice to continue knowledge-sharing and engagement.
